Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Charlie McConalogue TD, today announced the opening of the second call for applications to the Brexit Adjustment: Local Authority Marine Infrastructure Scheme 2022-2023.

The Scheme funds publicly owned marine infrastructure and is being funding under the EU Brexit Adjustment Reserve (BAR).  In April, under the first call of the Scheme, Minister McConalogue announced approval for 110 projects around the Irish coast.

Because time is short, the Spanish and community fleets continue to document themselves to try to defend themselves against the new offensive by the European Commission. They did not quite believe that in order to protect vulnerable marine ecosystems, the European Commissioner Virginijus Sinkevicius, head of Environment, Oceans and Fisheries, and his general director of Maritime Affairs, Charlina Vitcheva, intend to veto all bottom fishing in 87 areas of Spain, Portugal , France and Ireland.

By turning off a special gene with the CRISPR method, researchers at the Institute of Marine Research in Norway have created the world’s first salmon without gametes. The purpose has been to develop a farmed salmon that cannot mate with wild salmon if it escapes. 

Now the researchers have followed such salmon throughout their entire lives (a so-called production cycle) to compare growth, signs of welfare and omega3 content with normal farmed salmon.

Experts in underwater imaging technology are trialling the use of 3D digital models to map out and monitor complex marine environments and habitats close to Scottish salmon farms.ç

Led by Oban-based Tritonia Scientific – with support from the Lyell Centre at Heriot-Watt University, salmon producer Mowi, and the Sustainable Aquaculture Innovation Centre (SAIC) – the company is testing the effectiveness of using remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) to create digital twins of the seabed.

Iceland is heading for a mackerel crisis due to the state of fishing in its territorial waters, according to Norwegian fishing newspaper Fiskeribladet.

The popular Norwegian news outlet has claimed that Iceland has over 60 percent of their 148,000 tonne quota remaining to be fished, but are relying heavily on fishing in international waters.

As of August 1, the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, the competent authority of the Republic of Korea, began to operate officially with the recognition of the Sanitary Certificate in electronic format of the XML type issued by the National Fisheries and Aquaculture Service (Sernapesca ), for the export of seafood and aquaculture products.

The deputy director of Food Safety and Certification, Héctor Escobar, stressed that "this is great news that will allow exporters to have greater security in the export process

The world’s biggest wellboat operator, Sølvtrans, increased revenue by NOK 20.6 million to NOK 933 m (£79 m) last year, although operating profit fell slightly to NOK 508.1 m (NOK 511.1 m).

Sølvtrans blamed increased operating expenses for the result not being even better. Nonetheless, the operating margin is a solid 54.4% compared to 56% the previous year.

The warming of the sea could raise even more, if possible, the cost of diesel by Spanish fleets such as the tuna fishing, among other economic consequences such as the reduction in catches, which Mediterranean fishermen have already noticed this week.

“The idea of an allotment for growing mussels came up after study at the local university, in which researchers were able to grow mussels on lines to an eatable size in just one year,” explains Bernt Kjær Sørensen, chairman of Kerteminde Maritime Haver, on the east coast of Funen.

The idea gained further impetus when Sørensen discovered that a community near Aarhus had recently set up its own – successful – small-scale mussel farm.
