IN BRIEF - Shrimp quota debate ongoing

CANADA
Wednesday, August 31, 2011

There's a war of words going on between Fish, Food and Allied Workers and the Association of Seafood Producers over shrimp quotas. The ASP is advocating that a 3,000 metric tonne shrimp allocation be limited to offshore shrimp vessels only. FFAW president Earle McCurdy says he is "flabbergasted" by the suggestion.

Derek Butler of the ASP says the offshore has fished the quota for 14 years, and the inshore fleet is leaving quota in the water. McCurdy says his organization supports SABRI, the St. Anthony-based company that has fished the quota in partnership with Clearwater, in an offshore boat. McCurdy says SABRI now wants permission from the Department of Fisheries and Oceans to fish it using the inshore sector. He says the union supports that move because it results in more work for plant workers. He says the opposition amounts to other companies saying I don't have it, so St. Anthony can't have it.

IN BRIEF - Hanoi expands VietGAP aquaculture models

VIET NAM
Monday, June 17, 2024

The adoption of VietGAP aquaculture standards has been instrumental in raising public awareness of water environment management.

Hanoi's agricultural sectorhas supported fish farmers to develop and expand aquaculture models in line with VietGAP standards. This has resulted in high economic efficiency, clean and safe products, and reduced environmental pollution and production costs

After earning a low income from traditional fish farming, Le Van Phuong's family in Trung Tu Commune (Ung Hoa District) switched to VietGAP aquaculture on their 2.7-hectare farm with the help of local agricultural extension officers. Phuong has found that VietGAP fish are healthier and require less feed than before. He has also been able to stop using antibiotics to treat and prevent fish diseases.

A one-hectare VietGAP aquaculture model was also established on Do Thi Thu Ha's farm in Dai Ang Commune (Thanh Tri District) with the support of the Hanoi Agricultural Extension Center.
