“We weren’t setting out to look for sharks or other endangered species"
Anew study which used DNA barcoding to identify species in surimi – specifically imitation crab – sold in grocery stores in Los Angeles, California, U.S.A. found evidence of unlabeled shark meat in 62 percent of the sampled products, with some shark meat from critically endangered species.
The study, recently published in Food Control comes on the heels of another recent study which found evidence of endangered shark meat being sold in U.S. grocery stores either with the species mislabeled or under the vague label of “shark.”

Artisanal fishermen have escalated their protests by setting up barricades in response to the persistent presence of Chinese squid jigging vessels ("poteras") along the Chilean coast.
This action reinforces the national complaints from the fishing union, which accuses the Chinese ships of engaging in the informal (illegal) capture of jumbo squid (jibia) under the pretext of merely "refueling" near the coastline. Chilean fishermen assert that the operation of the Chinese fleet directly threatens their livelihoods and the sustainability of local fishing resources.
A dramatic maritime accident occurred on the night of October 4 near the Ca Na estuary, when the fishing vessel BD 83019-TS (22.6 m long, 800 HP), captained by Nguyen Tran Ut (born 1976), sank after being struck by the oil tanker MS FAVOR.
The fishing boat, with 11 crew members aboard, was navigating about 17 nautical miles southeast of the Ca Na estuary (Khanh Hoa province) when it was hit by the tanker, which was traveling south to north, at 10:30 PM.
Immediately, the fishing vessel BV 95869-TS, captained by Nguyen Van Tao (born 1989) operating nearby, managed to rescue 10 of the crew members. Tragically, Captain Nguyen Tran Ut remains missing and is presumed to be trapped in the ship's cabin. The rescued crew are currently being transported to the port of Ca Na.
According to reports from the captain of a nearby vessel, the oil tanker MS FAVOR continued its course without stopping to provide aid.
The Gia Lai Border Guard Command is coordinating the search and rescue efforts, contacting six nearby ships to continue the search for the missing captain. Authorities have also issued a request to national agencies (Navy Command, Coast Guard, and Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Centers) to mobilize additional resources. Furthermore, they are seeking contact with the Maritime Administration to obtain information about the tanker and coordinate further action.
Salmon Evolution (OSE: SALME) reports continued stable operations with minimal mortality and high biomass production.

“Salmon prices recovered during September on back of negative year on year growth in Norwegian biomass, supporting an increasingly tight supply-demand With a fully stocked farm and steadily improving production and harvest weights, Salmon Evolution is well positioned to capitalize on this”, CEO of Salmon Evolution, Trond Håkon said.
The project focuses on Atlantic salmon, rainbow trout, sea bass, and sea bream.
The Norwegian research institute, Nofima, is developing the SelectOrganic project, which will contribute to improving fish resilience to bacterial diseases and heat waves, in addition to improving product quality and resource efficiency, it explains.
The project is based on the need to reform organic aquaculture "as a spearhead in line with the European Green Deal and Farm to Fork strategies." Considering that the "level of organic aquaculture production in Europe is low," Nofima clarifies, it needs to be strengthened to overcome biological, technical, and economic barriers.

UK-based food and drinks company Princes Group has confirmed it will halt sourcing mackerel from the depleted Northeast Atlantic fishery and transition its entire Princes-branded mackerel range to MSC-certified Chilean mackerel.
The move follows the warning from the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) that Northeast Atlantic mackerel stocks have fallen so far that a 70% cut to catches will be required in 2026 if the species is to recover.
From October 2025, MSC-certified Chilean mackerel (Trachurus murphyi), also known as jack mackerel, will be available in Tesco and Sainsbury’s stores, with further UK and Dutch retailers to follow in 2026.

The Irish Minister of State with special responsibility for Fisheries, Timmy Dooley, has authorized the directive that formalizes the measures announced by Ministers Dooley and Martin Heydon (Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine) regarding certain restrictions on trawling activity by larger vessels within the six-nautical-mile zone and the baseline.
Dooley stated: "This Policy Directive marks the culmination of years of work on reviewing access to our coastal waters. This has been a matter of great public interest, and I would like to sincerely thank all stakeholders who participated in the public consultation process." Therefore, from October 1, 2026, trawling—that is, the use of trawling or purse seine nets—will be prohibited by fishing vessels over 18 meters in length within the six-nautical-mile zone and the baseline.
