CHILE
Tuesday, September 30, 2025
According to the 10th Sustainability Report by SalmonChile, there are different products to suit the tastes of each customer, and in various formats, such as fillets, portions, whole fish, with or without heads, cubes, fresh, frozen, or smoked.
For example, the United States prefers fresh Atlantic salmon fillets, while in the Brazilian market, whole salmon is preferred. On the other hand, the Japanese market consumes more frozen, headless coho salmon.
This product diversification requires a significant effort from Chilean salmon producers and industry brands to consolidate their position in various global markets.
The Alpesca case is one of the oldest ongoing legal proceedings in Argentina's civil jurisdiction. In 2014, under Provincial Law I No. 527 of Chubut, the assets and rights of this company, which owned seven vessels (Cabo San Sebastián, Cabo Vírgenes, Cabo Buena Esperanza, Cabo dos Bahías, Promarsa I, Promarsa II, and Promarsa III) and a processing plant, were declared "of public interest" and "subject to expropriation." The then-governor, Martín Buzzi, used the same legal basis that had been used two years earlier to intervene in Vieira Argentina, also with the aim of expropriation, although that process was ultimately not completed; in that case, the intervention took place in the province of Santa Cruz.

The Dutch cooperative bank Rabobank projects that a fishmeal shortage will begin in 2028, while the scarcity of fish oil will intensify throughout this decade.
The report states that the increased demand for both products stems from the expansion of high-value fish farming and the adoption of increasingly intensive aquaculture practices. However, this growth is facing disruptions caused by climate change and recurring El Niño events, which have strained the global supply.
Among the most significant consequences, the report notes a growing inelasticity of demand, a phenomenon that amplifies price volatility and raises benchmark prices in the event of supply shocks.
