Seattle-based trawlers claim they are partners in Alaska’s fisheries. But they are unwilling to make any sacrifices to protect Alaska’s fishery resources. They are threatening a lawsuit against a new plan that imposes a floating cap to reduce Bering Sea halibut bycatch based on the abundance of the stock…they opposed a six month emergency moratorium on trawling in the Bristol Bay red king crab savings zone to protect mating/molting crab…the impacts of trawl bycatch are completely omitted from the NPFMC 10-year snow crab rebuilding plan…they refute findings that “mid-water” trawl gear is sometimes on the bottom more than 80% of the time, calling it “unscientific”…trawlers in the Gulf of Alaska oppose the call for more observer coverages of their catches…and now, as the write up below by Intrafish shows, they claim a chum cap will put them out of business.
The motto of the Seattle-based trawlers – who take 80% of the value of ALL groundfish from the Bering Sea and Gulf of Alaska – should be “conservation is everyone else’s problem.”
The Canadian seafood group High Liner Foods has launched a new series of frozen skillet meals using salmon and farmed shrimp.
A skillet meal is a largely North American term for a single dish, normally fried in a skillet or pan for speed and convenience.

De Heus Animal Nutrition has opened a new marine and cold-water fish feed mill in Vietnam, strengthening its aquaculture and aquafeed production capacity.
The new facility, located in Vinh Long Province, has an annual production capacity of 168,000 tonnes and is the company’s first mill dedicated exclusively to feed for marine and cold-water fish species.
This investment expands De Heus’ aquaculture portfolio, enabling it to supply fish farming businesses in domestic and international markets while supporting the growing demand for high-quality seafood through specialised nutrition solutions.
Caleta Anahuac served as the setting for the launch of a new closed season for the iconic and renowned Southern Hake (*merluza austral*). Soledad Tapia, National Director of the National Fisheries and Aquaculture Service (Sernapesca), traveled to Puerto Montt alongside fishermen's representative Juan García to promote a campaign aimed at fostering awareness and responsibility during the peak reproductive period of one of southern Chile's—and the nation's cuisine's—most important fishery resources.
The biological closed season prohibits the harvesting of Southern Hake from the Los Lagos Region down to Magallanes, as well as the commercialization, processing, storage, and transport of the fresh resource throughout the country; violations constitute a crime punishable by imprisonment.

The Argentine government has imposed heavy fines on two Chinese vessels accused of illegal fishing within its jurisdictional waters.
The vessels in question are the *Bao Feng* and the *Bao Win*; both belong to the same Chinese company, which has been notified of the corresponding penalties. The fines total 1.6 million euros—equivalent to one million "fishing units" (UP), a variable index used in Argentina to calculate financial penalties for violations of the Federal Fishing Regime.
A report by the Latin American Foundation for Fisheries Sustainability indicates that the catch volumes of foreign vessels can be up to four times greater than those of the Argentine industry.

Brussels will provide €23 million over four years, allowing 30 European purse seiners and eight longliners to catch up to 55,000 tonnes annually.
The European Union and Seychelles have renewed their Sustainable Fisheries Partnership Agreement through a new protocol that will allow the EU fleet to resume tuna fishing operations in the waters of the Indian Ocean archipelago. The treaty will be in effect for four years, from 2026 to 2030, and entails a total European financial contribution of €23 million.
The agreement will benefit up to 30 tuna purse seiners and eight surface longliners, which will be able to apply for authorizations to fish for highly migratory species within Seychelles' exclusive economic zone.
Japan-based seafood giant Umios (formerly Maruha Nichiro) has decided to split up its subsidiary Taiyo A&F (TAFCO) and take on the aquaculture and processing portion of the business.
The transaction, effective 1 October, was approved by Umios’ board of directors on 28 July. Because TAFCO was already a wholly owned subsidiary of Umios, certain details of the transaction are omitted from public disclosure.
Umios said that TAFCO was already previously separated into a three-segment structure comprising fisheries, aquaculture, and processed foods.

The University of Chile’s veterinary pharmacology laboratory has restored all its operations following a fire at its facilities in February.
Farmavet provides testing used in Chile’s official monitoring programmes for aquaculture and agricultural exports. Its services include identifying veterinary-drug residues, chemical contaminants and marine biotoxins.
The laboratory retains its ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation and operates more than 70 analytical methods, of which over 50 are accredited. Its results are used in official programmes run by Chile’s National Fisheries and Aquaculture Service, Sernapesca, and the country’s Agriculture and Livestock Service.

Fish farming marine services company Inverlussa today issued a statement following the death of one its crewmen following a fall on a vessel in Scapa Flow, Orkney, last Thursday.
Neither the name of the deceased, nor the vessel he was crewing, have been released.
Mull-based Inverlussa is Scotland's biggest supplier of marine services to the salmon farming sector. Last week’s tragedy came just a day after it announced the acquisition of a 60% shareholding in Shetland’s, LCL Shipping Limited, increasing the size of its owned fleet to 23 vessels, and the number of people on its payroll to 146.

The OECD-FAO Agricultural Outlook 2026-2035 report was presented in Rome a few days ago; this document serves as an international benchmark for assessing the medium-term evolution of agricultural, fisheries, and aquaculture markets at national, regional, and global levels. Among other aspects, it analyzes consumption, exports, and prices of aquatic products over the coming decade.
According to the report, global consumption of aquatic animal products for food is expected to rise faster than consumption for other uses by 2035, driven primarily by Asia, while consumption in Europe is projected to see a slight decline.
