(CHILE, 1/27/2017)
Salmon company Fiordo Blanco plans to invest USD 1.5 million to expand the biomass of the Porcelana salmon fattening centre, located in the commune of Chaiten, in Los Lagos region.
The concession has an authorized area of 18.54 hectares.
According to the Environmental Impact Statement that the salmon company presented to the Environmental Assessment Service (SEA), the project seeks to extend the authorized biomass from 4,590 tonnes per year to 5,500 tonnes, which will be done from smolts.
In addition to biomass expansion, the company’s project aims at expanding the number and type of facilities, structures and/or infrastructure to support salmon cultivation, adding six new circular cages of 30 meters diameter by 20 meters high. In this way, the centre would have a total of 30 raft-cages.
"The salmon fattening centre will develop all of its farming activities, incorporating in addition land facilities consisting of shelter (habitability), offices, warehouses, a water pond, a private drinking water system and household wastewater collection and treatment and a generator of electricity," Fiordo Blanco said in its statement.
The company also indicated that the harvest stage will be carried out once the fish reach an average weight of 5.5 kg, and will be transported to the processing plant, to be marketed nationally or internationally.
