Private sector proposes measures to address illegal labour issue
(THAILAND, 7/8/2014)
In order to ensure that Thailand's status is upgraded in the United States' "Trafficking in Persons" (TIP) report next year, the Board of Trade of Thailand and the Thai Chamber of Commerce (TCC) will submit proposals to the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO).
These proposals include the increase in the efficiency of the government and the private sector as to labour problems so that the country does not lose export privileges to the United States and the European Union, or competitiveness in relation to other trading partners, The Nation reported.
TCC vice chairman Bhumindr Harinsutr pointed out that the chamber would first propose the plan to the Public-Private Joint Standing Committee together with two private-sector organisations -- the Federation of Thai Industries and the Thai Bankers Association - on 16 July.
“As a long-term solution to the labour issue, the TCC proposes that the government draw up a five-to-10-year plan to increase labour supply and organise foreign workers legally,” Bhumindr explained.
Besides, the Chamber suggests that the government upgrade the education system to produce more vocational students, to serve demand in the private sector, including small enterprises.
Involved government agencies should also set up an online database to collect information on fishing boats and fishery enterprises along the coast. A government agency should also regularly inspect fishing boats, and their workers.
Bhumindr stressed the importance for Thai products - including sugar cane, shrimp, tuna, other fish and garments - to recover their benefits from the US under the Generalised System of Preferences (GSP).
Meanwhile, the Thai Ministry of Labour is trying to resolve human trafficking in Thailand in cooperation with the International Labour Organization (ILO), the Bangkok Post informed.
