Several fishing companies will invest a total of MXP 2,275 million (USD 170 million) in the incorporation of seven new tuna vessels, which will contribute to increase food production and economic development.
The announcement was made by Antonio Suarez Gutierrez, president of Grupo Maritimo Industrial (Grupomar), who noted that this group´s own investment and those of another companies in the sector is a sign of the confidence in fishing and aquaculture public policies promoted by the Government of the Republic.
The executive said that the new fleet would add to the productive activities across the country, representing about 10,000 direct and indirect jobs.
In meeting with the Secretary of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fisheries and Food, Enrique Martinez y Martinez, the employer announced that the first of seven ships would be operational in March in the state of Colima.
Suarez Gutierrez also said that the production of Mexican tuna, which today exceeds 130,000 tonnes, would be mainly for consumption throughout the country.
