Shrimp production improves

  (NICARAGUA, 5/15/2013)

Six farmed shrimp producing cooperative firms located in the Estero Real, in Chinandega, managed to increase its production by 175 per cent thanks to a project led by a programme of the US Agency for International Development (USAID).

According to Wendell García, the coordinator of technical assistance to aquaculture farms of Empresas y Empleo programme, the cooperative firms’ production changed from 400 kilograms of shrimp per hectare to an average of 1,100 kilograms per hectare.

In turn, these entities export the entire production, mainly to Europe and the United States.

"In a period of almost three years, these cooperative firms have more than doubled their production thanks to several elements that have been combined, among which the improvement of the infrastructure, increased stocking density and technical assistance can be mentioned, supported by a specialized laboratory," García stated.

The manager of the programme Empresas y Empleo, Danilo Cruz DePaula, explained that in the laboratory, whose construction required a USD 30,000 investment, will perform the analysis on shrimp diseases, El Nuevo Diario reported.

The USAID presented the results of this programme under the framework of the forum "Partnerships for the development of shrimp farming in Nicaragua," held in Managua, which was attended by more than 60 representatives of the shrimp industry.

The initiative began to develop in June, 2011, with a programme of technical assistance valued at USD 200,000, which has helped farmers to improve their production methods.

The producers obtained USD 4 million from the company Servicios y Contrataciones SA (Serviconsa) to improve the infrastructure and operating cost system, and 60 families benefitted for shrimp culture in an area of 450 hectares.

According to the data provided by the Centro de Trámites de las Exportaciones (Cetrex), in 2012 Nicaragua exported farmed shrimp for USD 106.3 million.

Between 1 January and 9 May this year 3.9 million kilograms of farmed shrimp were exported for USD 20.9 million compared to 3 million kilograms exported for USD 17.9 million in the same period of 2012, the newspaper La Prensa reported.

These figures reflect the momentum undergone by the product despite the downward trend that some food items recorded in the international market.

Finally, Luis Lafuente, Serviconsa general manager, stressed that the target markets for farmed shrimp exports are diversifying. Some of these countries are Egypt, China, Russia and Puerto Rico.
