McDonald's to list calorie information on menus countrywide
(UNITED STATES, 9/13/2012)
McDonald’s USA will next week start listing calorie information on restaurant and drive-thru menus across the country to let customers and employees make better nutritional choices, McDonald’s USA President Jan Fields has announced.
In addition, the company has published its first-ever nutrition progress report, revealing several 2013 menu innovations currently in test that will include recommended food groups from the US Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans as shown in the messages supporting MyPlate.
These measures comprise the latest effort to support McDonald’s “Commitments to Offer Improved Nutrition Choices” announced in July 2011. The plan aims to help customers and employees make informed nutritional choices wherever they eat.
Only about 15 per cent of US residents accurately estimate the number of calories they need to maintain their weight, according to the International Food Information Council Foundation. This year, McDonald’s introduced a “Favorites Under 400” menu with the calorie information for some popular foods and beverages, including the Filet-O-Fish, to help consumers make more educated dietary decisions.

In the fall, approximately McDonald’s 750,000 employees will be able to take a voluntary nutrition e-learning programme to help increase their knowledge of calories, nutrition and menu offerings.
Late last year, McDonald’s launched a mobile app that provides customers with on-the-go nutrition information and an updated online meal-builder with customizable information.
“The transparency and availability of nutrition information enables consumers to make choices and can help caregivers teach and model decision-making behaviour to children. These are life skills that will benefit them not only at McDonald’s but in every aspect of life,” said Judith C Rodriguez, PhD, RD, LD/N, FADA, Chairperson and Professor, Department of Nutrition and Dietetics, Brooks College of Health.
This week, McDonald’s revealed plans to test more wholesome choices on its menu, including more recommended food groups. The additions being tested include:
- More seasonal fruit and vegetables;
- Additional produce side options and grilled chicken choices for Happy Meals;
- The McWrap with fresh vegetables, starting at 350 calories;
- New breakfast choices.
McDonald’s published its first nutrition report, McDonald’s USA Nutrition Journey: 2012 Progress Report, measuring the firm’s nutrition performance over the past year. Ernst & Young LLP conducted an independent examination of McDonald’s progress against its commitment goals.
The report focuses on three key nutrition commitments:
- Children’s Well-Being;
- Nutritionally Balanced Menu Choices;
- Nutrition Information and Education.
