BioMar Group and world leader in tilapia farming Aquacorporacion Internacional S.A. (ACI) are collaborating on a new joint business enterprise for the production of tilapia feed in Costa Rica.
It is expected that the new factory will begin production within the next 12 months, at which time it will deliver premium quality fish feed for the expanding production of tilapia in Central and South America.
The joint operation will eventually become central to BioMar’s work developing new concepts and diets for marine species farmed in Central America.
ACI is the second-largest producer of fresh tilapia fillets in the Americas and a major exporter of fresh premium tilapia to the US with an estimated market share of 25 per cent. The company sells fish under the Rain Forest brand.
With the new business venture, BioMar will attain a tighter grip on grower feeds for tilapia, where its expertise in feed and recipe optimization can help enhance efficiency and performance as compared to using standard tilapia diets.
“We are extremely satisfied with this new agreement”, stated BioMar Americas Vice-President Felipe Ureta.
“We already worked with ACI for several years as a supplier of fry feed for tilapia and also with their main shareholder, AquaChile, through the joint venture we have in the Chilean salmon business. We want to capitalize with this new investment on our actual position as leader within development of premium quality fish feed and on our know-how in feed production”, he added.
ACI’s production of fresh tilapia fillets targets the high end of the market, which prioritises food safety and sustainable production methods, and BioMar has nearly 50 years of experience in developing high-quality feed concepts and managing food safety issues under some of the strictest regulations anywhere.
Simultaneously, BioMar’s strong R&D base will open the door for ACI to take advantage of the most advanced technologies in feed production and the best nutritional solutions available.
“The joint venture is a natural next step in our growth strategy. It offers BioMar an entrance in Central America and an interesting platform for future growth in the Americas and worldwide”, Ureta said.
BioMar group is one of Norway’s foremost suppliers of high performance fish feed to the aquaculture industry. Its main business areas are feed for salmon and trout in Norway, the UK and Chile, and feed for trout, eel, sea-bass and sea-bream in Continental Europe.
ACI Group is dedicated to the production, processing and marketing of tilapia.
