Basque tuna vessel repels pirates’ attack UNEDITED
(SPAIN, 10/18/2011)
The Basque tuna vessel Alakrana was attacked by a pirate group when fishing in waters of the Indian Ocean but the private security on board managed to successfully repel the attack.
The boat, owned by Echebastar Fleet SLU, had been hijacked by Somali pirates two years ago and after 47 days in captivity was released.
At this time of the year when inter-monsoon winds hit the area, pirates’ activity increases.
Last weekend, other French ships were also attacked by groups of criminals.
The Alakrana, based in Bermeo (Biscay), has hired private security since October of 2009, when it was hijacked.
According to the general secretary of marine affairs, Alicia Villauriz, the Spanish government is "making all the effort necessary" to prevent future pirate attacks.
The central administration aims to ensure "the immediacy" of the security of ships through "financial support" to pay for private security services or through "foreign policy actions," the agency EFE reported.
Villaruiz also recalled that Spain maintains multilateral contacts with the United Nations and with the countries affected by piracy activities to address the fight against this phenomenon "in a comprehensive manner."
