The Mexican seafood exporters that participated in the 19th European Seafood Exposition (ESE), in the Belgian city of Brussels, performed sales for USD 42 million during the three-day event.
In the major European trade show, producers from several Mexican states were represented, such as Yucatan, Sonora and Baja California, and offered shrimp, abalone, lobster, sea cucumber, snail and different types of white fish, as informed the Mexican Embassy to the European Union (EU).
"To participate in the Seafood allows us to eliminate the existing international middlemen in octopus exports, which have traditionally been aimed at Spain and then they are delivered to various European countries, including Italy, France and Holland," said the President of Octopus Product System in Yucatan, Minerva Alonso.
According to the available statistics, between 2009 and 2010 Mexico doubled the sales of fish, seafood and shellfish in the EU market.
Specifically, last year the American country was the second largest octopus supplier to the EU, performing a delivery of 12,400 tonnes worth USD 69 million.
And in the case of the yellowfin tuna, Mexico was the third leading supplier in Europe, with 10,900 tonnes worth USD 27.2 million.
One of the new products to be exported to the European market is the yellow croaker, whose production in Mexico is around 15,000 tonnes per year.
The swordfish, shrimp, abalone, live lobster and sardines are also likely to enter European countries. According to the Embassy of Mexico, EU countries are interested in acquiring about 300,000 tonnes of sardines annually.
The head of the National Commission of Aquaculture and Fishery (Conapesca), Ramón Corral Ávila, took advantage of the framework of ESE to meet with representatives of the fishing industry in the EU and in Spain to attempt the standardization of the requirements and the regulations applied to the sector.
The idea is that during the next revision of the Free Trade Agreement between EU and Mexico the amendments contained in those standards could be included, Notimex reported.
