Fishing quota bids concern industrial sector
(CHILE, 4/27/2011)
Several fishing groups have rejected bids for up to 25 per cent of all fishing quotas promoted by the national government because they believe there would be an "expropriation" of their historical rights.
Companies are seriously evaluating the decision of taking the case to the courts as the Executive is planning to send the bill to Congress this year.
The main aim of the national authorities is to renew the current capture limits per ship owner (CLPSO).
"We believe that conceptually there would be an expropriation of the historic fishing rights that fishing enterprises boast," expressed Domingo Jiménez, the general manager of Sociedad Pesquera Coloso S.A.
"If there is a diagnosis that determines that the resource stocks are weak, the quotas should be very low, it is obvious that those countries which are working outside the 200 miles can find participating in the Chilean mackerel quota interesting,“ he added.
According to the industrial sector, it is estimated that the bids could lead to serious problems such as unemployment, Estrategia reported.
For the time being, they will try to convince the parliamentarians of the potentially disastrous consequences that could arise should the system start up.
An industry source warned that businessmen have already paid over USD 300 million for patents since the LMCA was set.
At the same time, members of the National Fishery Society (Sonapesca) met to discuss whether as a trade union they will take measures against the bidding system. Also, they will visit the Industrial Development Society (Sofofa) to defend their position.
The head of Sonapesca, Rodrigo Sarquis, stated that they are requiring the Government to assess the implications of the targeted changes on the industry.
Sonapesca need "to have an analysis of the results if they decide to apply the measure," Sarquis told Diario Financiero.
