Spanish tuna vessel repels pirate attack in Indian Ocean
(SPAIN, 11/2/2010)
After a chase that lasted for more than an hour, private security guards on board the Basque tuna vessel Elai Alai managed to protect the trawler and its crew from being hijacked by Somali pirates. The incident occurred around 200 miles west of the island of Mahé in the archipelago of the Seychelles.
The tuna vessel, owned by Echebastar Fleet S.L.U., had departed on Saturday from Port Victoria (Seychelles) with a crew of 30 people.
On Sunday morning, security guards found that two pirate boats approached the fishing boat to a distance that was "more than necessary," so they immediately launched emergency operations and protocols for the proposed repulsion of pirate attacks.
Private security fired various warning shots after two overtures to the Spanish boat, the criminals gave up and went away.
"When they saw that the bullets had passed them relatively close, they turned around and left," said the captain of the
Elai Alai, according to Cadena Ser.
The owner of the fishing company also owns Alakrana, who suffered a 47 day seizure in 2009, and the Ortube Berria -auxiliary support for the Intertuna III Spanish tuna vessel - which in mid-October repelled an attempted pirate attack in the Indian Ocean about 700 miles off the coast of Somalia.
In addition, in May, the Basque tuna vessel Campolibre Alai, from the same company, managed to elude a pirate assault in Madagascan waters and near the French islands of Mayyotte.
