Mexican company negotiates construction of tuna purseiners
(SPAIN, 8/6/2010)
One of the largest tuna companies in the world, owned by Antonio Suarez, plans to buy two or three tuna vessels valued at approximately EUR 20 million each from a shipyard in Asturias.
"I think their people are very professional, and I would personally love to have a new boat in Asturias. This would mean building two or three boats, which would take a long time to construct, therefore creating revenue for the region," Suarez told AS-66 magazine.
The Asturian-Mexican businessman is the leader of Grupomar, a company dedicated to fishing, processing and marketing of tuna, but also some other products.
In addition, the company sells a large range of canned fish, Europa Press reports.
Astilleros Armón would neither confirm nor deny the talks with Suarez, at least "until the deal is done and is completely agreed upon."
The company has shipyard facilities in Armón, Burela and Vigo, and executives expect to close negotiations after the summer to purchase Juliana, a shipbuilding company in Galicia.

Astilleros' plan was to construct two vessels, which would each be 75 metres in length.
However, due to the possible agreement with Suarez, it would ensure a labour pool of around 200 people from Juliana by building two or three smaller boats.
