Balfegó, the first company to bring bluefin tuna traceability to wholesale markets
(SPAIN, 2/7/2024)
Balfegó, a company specialized in fishing, aquaculture and trading of bluefin tuna, has become the first company in the sector to introduce traceability of its product in the wholesale market. In this way, Balfegó, which was a pioneer in 2008 in launching this system for the restaurant and retail markets, closes the circle of transparency and becomes the first company in the fishing sector with total traceability for its entire ecosystem. distribution.
With this initiative, which was presented yesterday at an event organized in Mercamadrid attended by, among others, Aurora de Blas, General Director of Fisheries Management and Aquaculture; David Chica, director of Mercamadrid; Juan Serrano, CEO of Balfegó Grup, and José Antonio Cobo, owner of CoboFish, all distributors, clients and final consumers of Balfegó bluefin tuna can access, through a QR code, detailed information about the bluefin tuna they have acquired and know the date and capture area, weight, length or fat level, as well as consult the health, quality and environmental sustainability certificates.
Balfegó's traceability system is a pioneer in the world of fish and goes far beyond what current legislation requires.
According to Juan Serrano, general director of Balfegó, “for us it is especially significant to take this step since we offer our clients to join Balfegó's vision of differentiating and distancing ourselves in the market through transparency, responsibility and sustainability, and betting on quality and scientific knowledge.”
As Begonya Mèlich, director of Balfegó's Innovation and Sustainability department, explains, “the wholesale channel was the only link we were missing to complete the traceability chain of our product, which is treated individually, tuna by tuna.
By taking this step –adds Mèlich–, we can ensure that all our direct clients and final consumers can identify and know in detail all the information related to the specific piece of bluefin tuna they have purchased.”
Balfegó recalls that all the bluefin tuna that leaves its factory has, since 2008, incorporated an innovative digital traceability management system whose objective is to offer maximum transparency to the consumer and fight against illegal trade of this species in the commercial chain.
The East Atlantic and Mediterranean bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus) is the only bluefin tuna fished and managed sustainably, from an innovation and traceability perspective, in the world. Balfegó considers that the effort made by the committed fleets and companies should serve as a model for all fisheries for tuna species that are overexploited.
