Eimskip introduces a more environmentally friendly and reliable shipping system

In the first quarter of next year, Eimskip will introduce important changes to the company's container shipping system, which aim to further strengthen customer service with more reliable and environmentally friendly shipping and reduce the carbon footprint. Changes include further simplifying the shipping system, reducing the number of port calls and shortening shipping routes, thereby reducing carbon emissions and lowering costs. The change that is now being presented is the final phase of a project that started earlier in the year with navigation system changes that were implemented in the spring months.

Main points

• The goal is that the total changes that have been made to the shipping system during the year, including this one that is planned to be implemented in the first quarter of next year, will, among other things, have the following effects on an annual basis:
  • Sailed miles will decrease by over 40,000 or more than 5%
  • Reduction in oil consumption by almost 5,000 tons and CO2 emissions by 15,000 tons or about 7% and if we compare it to the year 2022, there is a reduction in oil consumption by almost 11,000 tons or about 14%
  • A reduction of one container ship in service which has already been implemented and there are now 11 in number
  • With these changes, the number of emission allowances (ETS units) that Eimskip has to buy from next year is reduced, which contributes to lower financial costs for society.

• Increased reliability and improved customer service includes, among other things, in itself:
  • Increased service with shorter transit time from the UK to Iceland
  • Imports from Denmark and Sweden arrive in Reykjavík on Monday, or a day earlier than in the current system
  • Weekly coastal cruises in Iceland that ensure a better and more environmentally friendly service to the countryside
  • Simplification of navigation on the North American route that supports the transport of fresh fish
  • Increased service in transport from the north and west of Norway to the Faroe Islands and North America
  • Direct connection from the Faroe Islands to Germany
• Increased emphasis on the efficiency and capacity of ports to, among other things, support reliability and efficiency
  • New port service entity in Rotterdam
  • A new and larger port in Teesport in the UK
  • Call times changed and capacity increased in certain ports
  • Investment in a new harbor crane in Sundahöfn and an increase in the number of cranes in Reyðarfjörður
• Changes to sailings with Royal Arctic Line (RAL) where a call in Germany will now be part of that plan
• Eimskip will continue to look for ways to optimize and reduce the environmental impact of the shipping system in both the short and long term

The changes are part of a road trip that began earlier this year with changes to coastal shipping with Iceland and the integration of the reefer system in Norway with the container shipping system through the Faroe Islands together with a new ship, Bakkafoss, which entered service on the North American route.

There are therefore changes in the company's three shipping routes, i.e. red, yellow and blue. The red route will continue in co-sailing with RAL, but with the change that the route will have a stop in Bremerhaven in Germany, while the number of stops in other ports will be reduced. The blue route will no longer sail to Bremerhaven but will add a stop on the northern route at Teesport in the UK for imports to Iceland. The yellow route will change considerably, but will continue to play an important role for the Vestmannaeyjar and will receive increased importance in services to the Faroe Islands.

The changes support the company's environmental goals and offer customers reliable and more environmentally friendly transport as well as meeting increased international requirements. They are also part of Eimskip's countermeasures to reduce the need to purchase emission allowances in connection with the expected implementation of the European Emission Trading System (ETS) at the beginning of 2024.
