Greenpeace: ´What Cooke Aquaculture does is the darker side of the salmon industry´
(CHILE, 8/25/2023)
Greenpeace referred to what was denounced by the Interferencia medium, which, with data obtained from a transparency request to Sernapesca, identified that in 2019 Cooke Aquaculture -with more than 20 concessions in the Aysén Region- produced more than 8 thousand tons of salmon , when they only had 125 authorized, that is, more than 64 times what was allowed in their technical project of the year 2000.

Silvana Espinosa, spokeswoman for the organization, indicated that “it is unacceptable and unpresentable that a company like Cooke Aquaculture is operating outside the law. These records mean that the capacity authorized in its original technical project for a farm that is also located in a protected area, such as the Laguna San Rafael National Park, one of the highest protection categories, is exceeded by more than 6,000%. environment that our country has”.
From Greenpeace they explain that when the amount of fish authorized to produce is exceeded, as in the case of Cooke Aquaculture, the health of the sea is put at risk, because more organic material is added such as dead fish, feces and uneaten food, among others, to a place that does not have the environmental capacities to support it, collapsing that ecosystem.
“The production of fish that exceeds what is authorized irreversibly damages the environment, generating alterations in the natural balance of the sea, such as; anaerobic conditions (total or partial loss of oxygen), eutrophication (proliferation of algae) and acidification of the waters (difficulty for the formation of shells and skeletons of marine organisms)”, indicated Espinosa.
They add that Cooke Aquaculture “is the darker side of the industry. Planting more fish than authorized is a constant way of operating by large companies, distorting the system with false information or lack of information, preventing correct measures from being taken to prevent further environmental damage.”
In November 2022, Greenpeace filed a complaint against Cooke Aquaculture before the Superintendence of the Environment (SMA) for circumventing the Environmental Impact Assessment System (SEIA), because in said production cycle, the center in question had planted more fish than authorized.
“The supposed “miracle” of the salmon farming industry is simply explained because environmental laws are not being applied, however, from Greenpeace we are not going to lose track of the negligence with which these large salmon companies act. We cannot allow an industry to profit directly and with impunity from the destruction of the fjords and channels of Chilean Patagonia. It corresponds then, that the Superintendency of the Environment supervises and sanctions these very serious facts”, said Silvana Espinosa.
