With record approval of resolutions, the 101st annual meeting of the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission (IATTC) ended

  (CANADA, 8/12/2023)

The appointment and meeting of working groups were held in the city of Victoria, BC, Canada between July 31 and August 11.

The 101st annual meeting of the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission (IATTC) concluded successfully with the record approval of resolutions including decisions on non-entangling FADs, FAD recovery, sharks, harvest control rules, bluefin tuna, northern albacore, southern albacore and ship tracking system.

At the annual meeting headed by Alfonso Miranda Eyzaguirre, a series of resolutions on dorado or dolphinfish research and one on climate change were approved for the first time in the organization's history.

"The attendees coincided in highlighting the great productivity of the meeting and the order in which the entire event took place," he said.

Miranda Eyzaguirre pointed out that the CIAT is a solid institution with 74 years of existence and that it has established itself as a beacon and symbol of sustainable fishing on the planet.

“We can be proud of having achieved it, of having made notable progress in recent years, despite the adversities and challenges brought to us by the COVID-19 pandemic. We have just approved transcendent measures and we have the challenge of executing them properly and monitoring their compliance”, he added.

In parallel to the annual meeting, sessions of the working group for the promotion and dissemination of the DOLPHIN SAFE certification system were held; and the permanent working group on tuna monitoring.

The meeting of the parties to the Agreement on the Dolphin Protection Program (APICD) and the Administration and Finance Committee was also held, as well as the Review Committee of the measures adopted by the Commission and the Permanent Working Group on Capacity of the fleet

In the work meetings, chaired by Miranda Eyzaguirre, a large group of observers also participated, including environmental Non-Governmental Organizations or the tuna fishing industry, as well as the field of marine and environmental science and research.

It should be noted that the CIAT is made up of 21 members and 5 cooperating non-members.

At the end of the annual meeting, the delegates elected the new IATTC authorities, with Ecuadorian Andrés Arenas as president and Nicaraguan delegate Julio Guevara as vice president.

Note:

Alfonso Miranda Eyzaguirre was elected president of the CIAT at the annual meeting in Bilbao (Spain) in 2019 and successively re-elected three times.
