ARVI demand a super-reduced VAT of 4% for fish
(SPAIN, 9/15/2022)
The fishing sector represented by ARVI addresses the Government of Spain to emphasize the necessary application of a super-reduced VAT for fish
Vigo - Today, the fishing sector represented by the Cooperative of Fisheries Owners of the Port of Vigo (ARVI) has transferred to the President of the Government of Spain the request that it has been making to the Ministries concerned with the Central Administration, regarding to the necessary application of the super-reduced VAT of 4% for fish, as has been done in the case of other foods recognized as "basic".
After the COVID pandemic that began in 2019, it has become clear that the supply of products of marine origin to the population is a fundamental pillar of the supply chain. For this reason, the fishing sector and the sea-industry complex have undertaken to ensure that consumers are supplied with a product that -everyone knows- contributes greatly to guaranteeing the health of citizens.
On the other hand, the effects of the invasion of Ukraine increase the importance of guaranteeing the best possible food sovereignty, as well as the need to provide Spanish consumers with products such as fish, protein with the lowest water and CO2 footprint.
Fish and marine resources are the foods that, taking into account their characteristics, most strengthen the health of the population: the higher the per capita consumption of fishery products, the lower future health costs and the greater consolidation of the marine industry chain, of the that the fishing fleet integrated in ARVI constitutes the first link.
Having shown that the intake of fish is, in the medium and long term, synonymous with investment in consumer health and, therefore, with the reduction of health costs for the States, ARVI has transmitted its concern to the President of the Government Seeing how, once the rise in consumption during the pandemic has ended, the crisis resulting from the invasion of Ukraine is causing a very noticeable drop in the consumption of fishery products, which is affecting their first-sale prices and, consequently, the profitability of fishing companies, already precarious due to growing operating costs.
