  (MEXICO, 8/30/2019)

After the presentation by the National Institute of Fisheries and Aquaculture (Inapesca) of the results of the assessment of shrimp populations on the Pacific Ocean coast, it was agreed to lift the temporary closure for fishing of all existing shrimp species in the areas and dates indicated below:

  • I.- As of September 24, 2019, in the estuarine lagoon systems, marshes and bays located in the center-north and south of Sinaloa, Nayarit, Colima, Jalisco and the Upper Gulf of California.
  • II.- As of September 21, 2019, in the bays of Sonora.
  • III.- As of September 10, 2019, in the main body of the Laguna Magdalena-Almejas lagoon system and San Ignacio Lagoon, the state of Baja California Sur.
  • IV.- As of September 15, 2019, in estuarine estuaries and canals north of Magdalena Bay, in the state of Baja California Sur.
  • V.- As of September 30, 2019 in the marine waters of the federal jurisdiction of the Pacific Ocean, from the border with the United States, Gulf of California, to the limits with the Republic of Guatemala.

After the exchange of positions among producers, Inapesca reported that, based on the results of the distribution, abundance, growth and migration studies, it was concluded that:

  • Shrimp species completed their reproductive cycle during the 2019 closed season, within the average pattern.
  • Abundances are lower compared to 2018 in most lagoon systems and marine areas.
  • Sizes are similar to 2018 in most lagoon systems and marine areas.
  • The projection scenarios indicate that the 50 percent migration process will occur around the lunar effect between September 23 and 26

Inapesca explained that the technical and scientific studies have as main objective to maximize the use of the shrimp resource in terms of weight, biomass and utility, for which biological samples were carried out in the lagoon, riverbank, high seas and plants to evaluate the development reproductive, growth, migration and recruitment of shrimp.

In the same way, 12 meetings were held with the productive sector during the 2019 ban period of shrimp, with the purpose that from the scientific information of the Institute, the reproductive cycle of the organisms be respected so that they reach the commercial sizes for the benefit of the productive value chain.

It should be noted that the agreed dates have no scope in legal terms until the Official Gazette of the Federation is published
