245 tonnes of bluefin tuna released to compensate overfishing in 2018
(MEXICO, 5/1/2019)
In compliance with the commitments of the Government of Mexico to promote sustainability in the sector, last weekend were released the first 245 tonnes of bluefin tuna (Thunnus orientalis) of the 483 tonnes overcaptured in the 2018 season.
The operation was carried out in the open sea, on the Mexican coasts, 60 kilometers from Baja California, where the tuna boats Sebastian IX and Antonio Pérez II towed the cages to later release the fish, as marked by international agreements.

The release was accompanied by observers from the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission (IATTC) and the National Commission of Aquaculture and Fisheries (Conapesca), and by personnel from the companies Servax Bleu and Pesquera Chcihimecas.
With this measure, Mexico has already been placed in compliance with the catch as a member of the IATTC.
The release operation was carried out through the transfer of tuna from a fattening pen to an empty one with a moderate frequency, and once it was transferred, the tuna were released.

On these actions, CONAPESCA director Raul Elenes Angulo informed that in order to contribute to the sustainability of the resource, the Government of Mexico put into operation, during the last tuna fishing season, a series of actions coordinated with the tuna industry of the eastern Pacific Ocean, among which are:
- Designation of a Federal Fisheries Officer for each vessel to verify strict compliance with the catch of the species.
- Publication, in the Official Gazette of the Federation, of the Secretarial Agreement on bluefin tuna that will be updated for the 2020 season.
- Follow-up of the vessels fishing under the supervision of observers of the Research Trust for the Development of the National Program for the Use of Tuna and Dolphin Protection and others around Protected Aquatic Species (Fidemar).
- Perform documentary review of the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT) Master and Bluefin Tuna Catch Document (BCD) issued, documents through which bluefin tuna is exported to international markets.
- Timely information, catch by catch, to the industry and all involved.
The commissioner stressed that CONAPESCA will continue with its work to maintain the order in the tuna fishery, for which it will carry out inventory audits by farm to all companies, reactivate the NOM-021-SAG / PESC-2017 for the responsible use of bluefin tuna in aquaculture, in floating cages in waters under federal jurisdiction of Mexico in the Pacific Ocean, and will put into operation the Catch Documentation System (Renacatun).
