Baramundi producer invests USD 2 million to increase its production capacity

The local company Barramundi Asia has just inaugurated the expansion of its barramundi nursery, a project in which it invested USD 2 million with the purpose of tripling its production to almost 1.8 million fry per year.

 By producing its own fry, the company can control the entire fish life cycle, from the egg stage until it reaches the final consumer. The fry that are born in their facilities are transferred to marine pens where they develop until they reach commercial size, and after their harvest they are processed marketed under their Kühlbarra brand.

With thus expansion, Barramundi Asia expects to produce 6,000 tonnes of barramundi yearly, more than what Singapore's 120 fish farms produced in 2018, according to Strait Times.

The nursery, located on Pulau Semakau, on the south of Singapore, now occupies 1,200 sqm, and eight 50 cubic m tanks were added for rearing barramundi firgerlings. With this, the company´s capacity will raise production from 50,000 to 150,000 fish a month.

"As a city-state that imports more than 90 per cent of our food, Singapore is vulnerable to external shocks and developments that impact food supply," Minister for the Environment and Water Resources Masagos Zulkifli said at the official opening on last February 27.

In this regard, he stressed that local growth will help reduce the dependence on imports, and said that aquaculture farms can take advantage of the latest technologies to overcome resource constraints.

"The extension of the nursery and implementation of new technologies bring us closer than ever to achieving Barramundi Asia's vision of becoming the world's largest supplier of sustainable barramundi,” said Joep Klein Staarman, co-founder and managing director of Barramundi Asia.
