Salmon escape from Cermaq’s site after fire
(NORWAY, 8/1/2018)
Cermaq estimates that between 1,000 and 10,000 salmon escaped from its Skinnstakkvika site located in Ryggefjorden, in Måsøy municipality, Finnmark province, after a fire damaged a cage.
The firm's regional director Gunnar Gudmundsson told the site Kyst.no that employees saw the fire from a distance and responded quickly.
“It took about an hour before the fire was extinguished, and the staff repaired the damage to the collar and the cage,” he said, Fish Farming Expert reported.
The executive said it was too early to pinpoint the cause of the fire, but it appeared to have started in a part of the electrical plant.
In a press release, Cermaq said the escaped fish were about 500 grams in weight and that there were about 162,000 fish in the cage when the fire broke out.
Gudmundsson explained that they have requested their largest wellboat to come and pump all the fish from the cage that caught fire and moved them to another cage. After that, he said that they will count the remaining fish so that the total extent of the escape can be mapped.
