TASA denies sale plans
(PERU, 4/28/2018)
Fishing company Tecnología de Alimentos SA (TASA) denied the allegations about possible plans to sell its operations to a third party.
"TASA is not for sale or waiting for a purchase proposal. On the contrary, we have just concluded a strategic planning process to define plans and actions for the next 3 to 5 years," company representatives told El Comercio.
"We are very clear about the direction that we must follow and we are convinced that TASA will continue to be a benchmark of leadership, ethics, solidity, quality, transparency, efficiency, innovation and sustainability in the world fishing industry in the future," the company added in written statements.
According to the news portal Undercurrentnews.com, citing a source close to the company, TASA is making important restructurings to optimize its operations and improve its profitability, after several difficult fishing seasons. It added that these changes could have the objective of preparing the company for a possible sale, in case they receive a "good offer".
Speaking to El Comercio, TASA spokesmen said that they expect 2018 to be "the year of recovery" of the sector, after four bad years, of adverse oceanographic conditions. In that sense, they consider the announcement of the availability of a quota of 3.3 million tonnes of anchovy for the first season, which began on April 12, as good news.
It should be remembered that for the first anchovy fishing season of 2015, 2016 and 2017, the total quotas were set at 2.5 million, 1.8 million and 2.8 million, respectively.
According to TASA, in the first season of last year this company was the most efficient, fishing about 98 per cent of its quota, above the industry average, which was 85.8 per cent, and they hope "to repeat that performance this year".
