Workers’ strike was illegal, COPEINCA clarifies
(PERU, 10/29/2015)
The fishmeal and fish oil producing company COPEINCA regretts the violent acts that occurred between unionized workers and members of the National Police, following the work stoppage by employees of the company, but it also stresses the illegality of the measure.
COPEINCA Communications Department and CFC Investment clarified through a statement that the stoppage that took place on Tuesday, 27 October was encouraged by the union Sindicate Unico de Motoristas y Oficiales de Maquinas de Peru (SUMOPP) was illegal, since it did not meet the requirements by law.
In this regard, it reported that the National Superintendency of Labor Inspection (SUNAFIL) verified the above and also deemed it as so.
Moreover, it denied that the company intends to ignore workers’ fringe benefits. COPEINCA ensures it has fulfilled all its commitments, promoting talks to solve the discrepancies that may arise with the unions.
"Despite this, the unions chose to maintain its crackdown, exposing workers to unnecessary conflict with the police," the press release adds.
Finally, COPEINCA and CFC Investments ratified "their respect for, commitment to and compliance with labour rights, promoting a culture of talks to reach agreements that benefit all workers."
