NY firm to instal processing plant in North Carolina

  (UNITED STATES, 10/22/2013)

RC Creations LLC is planning for a new fish processing plant in North Carolina, which will provide employment to 120 locals in its first year's operation.

For the project, which will be located near Wilmington in Pender County, the company is planning to make an investment of about USD 30 million by the end of 2017.

The venture was made public last Friday by Tony Almeida, Gov. Pat Crory's senior jobs and economy adviser at a ceremony which took place at Pender Commerce Park, where 20 hectares are going to be destined for the fish processing plant, reports the StarNewsOnline.

Construction of the facilities will cost approximately USD 25 million with between USD 3 to USD 5 million to be destined to the purchase of equipment.

The new factory will import fresh and frozen seafood from all over the world to make ready-to-eat products, which will trade in the country and abroad

However, not everyone welcomed the news. Fishermen and seafood dealers in North Carolina are not pleased about it because they argue that this project is a bad move for the state, according to Carolinacoastonline.

“If they’re going to have a processing plant, let’s look out for North Carolina and it’s people, not tainted imports. We can’t compete with imports, not with USD 4 per gallon fuel prices. I don’t know of anyone in Carteret County or North Carolina who can compete with third world wages,” pointed out Bradley Styron, member of the N.C. Marine Fisheries Commission and owner and operator of Quality Seafood on Cedar Island

RC Creations LLC’s vice-president of manufacturing, Richard Nordt, predicts that at least 120 people will be employed in the plant’s initial stage.

The firm, a division of Acme Smoked Fish Corp., based in New York, says it expects to start operating by October 2014 and plans to expand to a further 100,000 square feet of space and give employment to an additional 200 workers.
