Louisbourg Seafoods is committed to the sustainable fishing practices that will allow the fishing industry to thrive for centuries to come

Louisbourg Seafoods, The Taste Of Tradition

  (CANADA, 5/31/2012)

In the face of changing world markets and the many new and exciting challenges in today's modern fishery, the Louisbourg Seafoods group of companies recognizes that innovation is the key to success.

Committed to providing the freshest, highest quality products to the global marketplace, Louisbourg Seafoods’ team strives daily for new and innovative ways to make this happen.

Because Louisbourg Seafoods constructs and services their own traps, nets, and other fishing gear, the company is able to modify their equipment to produce a higher quality product while reducing their impact on the ocean ecosystem by avoiding by-catch and discard mortality

The company embraces new challenges in such a way that maintains traditional fishing and production methods of its ancestry while adopting a modern and innovative mindset. Louisbourg Seafoods’ team of skilled and loyal employees work diligently on the water and throughout the company’s plants to bring only the finest product to its customers.

Louisbourg Seafoods is 100 percent committed to fishing sustainably; as such, it has two biologists on staff and have a formal partnership with Cape Breton University who oversees the species development and fishery research projects.

Louisbourg Seafoods actually harvests the seafood in its own vessels, the Seven Wonders being one and, by harvesting the product the company process in its own plants, it has total control over the quality

Louisbourg Seafoods fully supports and respects the conservation measures set forth by DFO and is active in the development of fishery management plans and industry feedback sessions with government.

Through its partnerships with First Nations communities (term that collectively refers to various Aboriginal peoples in Canada who are neither Inuit nor Métis), Louisbourg Seafoods has learned to adopt the philosophy of respecting the natural environment, a belief passed down through the historical culture of the Mi’kmaw people. With this in mind, Louisbourg Seafoods has often exceeded the challenge of sustainable fishery practices as they have opted out of fisheries the company felt were unsustainable, set larger-than-minimum size standards, and refused to use gear that are not sustainable.

The company works closely with the community - in fact, the community influences each and every decision the company makes

Louisbourg Seafoods has also joined the World Ocean Council (WOC) as the first company from the fish harvesting sector to become part of the growing international business leadership alliance on Corporate Ocean Responsibility. The World Ocean Council (WOC) brings together the diverse ocean business community to collaborate on stewardship of the seas.

Ka' Le Bay Seafoods Limited is the company’s main headquarters for groundfish production. Located in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, Ka' Le Bay is the largest producer of groundfish in eastern Nova Scotia. Founded in 2005, Ka' Le Bay Seafoods has gained a solid reputation for producing top quality fresh and frozen groundfish products, especially fresh redfish packed under the Mira Bay brand.

Being part of a small, close-knit community means that the employees truly are part of the team

Northsyde Processing Limited, located in North Sydney, Nova Scotia, is the only shrimp processing plant in Nova Scotia. Started in December 2008, Northsyde Processing was founded in order to process a top quality cooked and peeled shrimp prawn from Nova Scotia's natural, wild-caught shrimp resource. Northsyde Processing produces shrimp from only top quality, wild-caught fisheries in Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, Quebec, and Maine.

Louisbourg Seafoods has often exceeded the challenge of sustainable fishery practices as they have opted out of fisheries the company felt were unsustainable

As a stevedoring company, J.K. Marine Services, provides an invaluable service to all harvesting and processing operations within Louisbourg Seafoods’ companies. J.K. Marine Services is able to provide stevedoring expertise to all marine vessels within Industrial Cape Breton. Louisbourg, being home to J.K. Marine Services, is located within 25 km of the Sydney Airport, making Louisbourg an ideal choice to do business for any offshore industry.

About Louisbourg Seafoods Ltd.
