Competitors create international refrigeration centre

  (SPAIN, 7/30/2010)
Company executives from Pescapuerta, Armadora Pereira and Frioya have negotiated a plan to construct an international refrigeration centre based in Spain. The factory will store and distribute frozen fish to several countries.

While Pescapuerta and Armadora Pereira, two of the major fishing companies of Galicia, are competing in catches and sales of frozen fish, they have signed a memorandum stating their intentions with Frioya, owner of the largest refrigeration complex in Spain, to create the new business.

"It's the first time that two owners who compete in the frozen fish sector, will focus on an ambitious project with Frioya to be present in all the major markets," said José Puerta, president of Pescapuerta.

Meanwhile, José Enrique Pereira, CEO of Armadora Pereira said that "We are competitors within the fishing grounds and the markets, but we decided to work together in this new field with the idea to become one of the largest companies related to Frozen storage and logistics in Europe."

For its part, the general director of Frioya, José María García Fernández, stated that the agreement "is historical," since the initiative will allow the two companys "increased trading volume and efficiency."

"The main objective is to grow within and outside of Spain," said the businessman.

There still remains "formal aspects" to consider in the naming of the new company.

Pereira estimated that the project will be completed within approximately two or three years," reports Faro de Vigo

Puerta added that this joint initiative "will certainly be one of the most important" undertakings carried out "in the Galician fishing sector in recent years."

Both Pescapuerta and Armadora Pereira have vessels operating in several countries: Argentina, Senegal, Namibia, South Africa, Peru, Chile and the Northwest Atlantic.

Half of the production of both companies is distributed to the domestic market, while the rest is exported.

Frioya's Vigo plant has a storage capacity of 135,000 cubic meters, the warehouse is also approved by the Border Inspection Post (BIP) of the European Union.
