Six men go to court over fish fraud

Six men were charged with fish fraud following an investigation into alleged illegal fish landings. The men appeared in private at Lerwick Sheriff Court on Thursday, made no plea or declaration and were released on bail.
The fraud charges came following police raids at the Shetland Catch Ltd fish processing factory in September 2005 after extensive investigations by the Scottish Fisheries Protection Agency (SFPA).
Also charged with fraud and defeating the ends of justice were Derek Leask of Kallibrig, Weisdale, former managing director of one of Europe's largest pelagic fish factories, and managing director Simon Leiper of South Whiteness, Shetland.
Additionally, skippers David Hutchison of Symbister, John Irvine of Braeside, Allister Irvine of Symbister, and Victor Buschini of Hambleton, Poulton-Le-Fylde, Lancashire, were charged as well. Buschini is skipper of the Fraserburgh trawler Enterprise and was charged with fraud and attempted fraud, BBC reports.
Hutchison and Buschini are directors of the Scottish Pelagic Fishermen's Association (SPFA).
Shetland Catch is the largest pelagic factory of its kind in Europe. It is located in the waters of the North Atlantic.
The company sources frozen mackerel and herring from local suppliers and also from suppliers throughout Scotland, Ireland and Scandinavia.
Fish fraud has not been uncommon in recent times, with fish-and-chip shops in the UK selling increasing quantities of Vietnamese catfish (Pangasius hypophthalmus) falsely labelled as British cod to unknowing customers.
Moreover, last September, Director of Daventry-based One Food Limited (OFL) Neil Stansfield was jailed for more than two years for purposefully selling falsely labelled organic seafood products.
