Bakkafrost Reports Strong Q2 Harvests, But Scottish Mortality Costs Soar

The salmon farmer harvested 23,000 gutted weight tonnes of fish in Q2 2025, a significant increase from last year, though incident-based mortality costs in Scotland saw a sharp rise.

Tórshavn – Bakkafrost, the salmon farming giant operating in Scotland and the Faroe Islands, announced today in a trading update that it harvested a robust 23,000 gutted weight tonnes (gwt) of fish in the second quarter of 2025. This marks a notable increase from the 21,592 gwt harvested in the same period last year.

All harvest volumes are provided in head-on gutted (HOG) equivalents.

Breaking down the Q2 2025 figures, Bakkafrost's Faroese operations yielded 16,000 gwt with an impressive average weight of 5.0 kilograms per fish. Meanwhile, its Scottish farms contributed 7,000 gwt at an even higher average weight of 5.9 kilograms per fish.

For comparison, Q2 2024 saw harvests of 10,226 gwt from the Faroe Islands and 11,366 gwt from Scotland, indicating a shift in production distribution this year.

Soaring Mortality Costs in Scotland

Preliminary estimates reveal a significant concern: incident-based mortality costs in Scotland for Q2 2025 are projected to reach DKK 27 million (approximately $3.9 million USD). This represents a substantial increase compared to the DKK 3 million reported for incident-based mortality in Scotland during Q2 2024.

Fortunately, Bakkafrost reported no incident-based mortality costs in the Faroe Islands for Q2 2025, mirroring the trend from the previous year.

Operational Highlights and Future Outlook

In terms of smolt stocking, Bakkafrost introduced 5.4 million smolts into marine farms in the Faroes during Q2 2025, alongside 0.9 million in Scotland, where its Applecross hatchery continues its phased build-up to full capacity.

The company's feed subsidiary, Havsbrún, processed 159,500 tonnes of marine raw materials in Q2. It subsequently sold 37,500 tonnes of feed and 9,000 tonnes of fish meal during the quarter.
