LAXEY and Marel Collaborate to Revolutionize Land-Based Salmon Processing

  (ICELAND, 1/17/2025)

Innovative partnership supports LAXEY’s goal of producing 32,000 tons of salmon annually.

LAXEY has signed a transformative agreement with Marel, a global leader in fish processing technology, to deliver cutting-edge equipment and software for a new land-based salmon processing facility in Vestmannaeyjar, Iceland. This partnership marks a pivotal step in LAXEY’s ambitious plan to achieve an annual production capacity of 32,000 tons of salmon while maintaining a strong focus on sustainability and operational efficiency.

Milestones in LAXEY’s Aquaculture Journey

The first phase of LAXEY’s aquaculture project was successfully completed in late 2024, with the initial batch of smolt transferred to the Vestmannaeyjar facility. The inaugural harvest is slated for autumn 2025. This partnership with Marel underscores LAXEY’s commitment to leveraging state-of-the-art technology to advance sustainable land-based aquaculture.

Marel's SmartLine Grader and the Axin Software

High-Performance Solutions for a Growing Industry

Land-based aquaculture is rapidly expanding, requiring robust, precise, and sustainable processing solutions to meet market demands. To address these needs, Marel will provide LAXEY with its Smartline Grader and AXIN software:

  • Smartline Grader: Enables precise size grading of salmon at high speed, enhancing production accuracy and efficiency.
  • AXIN Software: Offers real-time data monitoring for superior decision-making and process optimization. It also supports traceability and ensures consistent product quality, aligning with LAXEY’s sustainability goals.

These tools will empower LAXEY to maximize raw material utilization, ensure food safety, and meet the rising global demand for high-quality seafood.

A Shared Vision for Sustainability

“Having a clear overview of the processing, strong traceability, and the ability to ensure efficiency at all stages of production is incredibly important to us,” says Kristmann Kristmannsson, Processing and Procurement Manager at LAXEY.

Marel’s Vice President of Fish, Skúli Sigurðsson, adds: “Our customers want reliable data, high-quality products, and technology that ensures operational excellence. We’re proud to support LAXEY as they set new benchmarks in sustainable aquaculture.”

Technology Driving Excellence

By integrating advanced technology into their operations, LAXEY aims to redefine standards in land-based salmon aquaculture. The Smartline Grader and AXIN software deliver precision, efficiency, and transparency, providing LAXEY with a competitive edge in a fast-evolving industry.

This collaboration not only strengthens Iceland’s position as a leader in sustainable aquaculture but also reinforces the global shift toward eco-friendly and efficient food production methods.
