Orpagu Triples Its Workforce and Strengthens Distribution in 2024 with Sustainability and Innovation as Its Flagship
(SPAIN, 12/16/2024)
The Tui warehouse and processing plant plays a vital role—and will become increasingly important in the future—in balancing supply and demand through efficient storage solutions. This capability positions Orpagu as a leading authority in surface longlining.
With the aim of bringing its products even closer to consumers, in 2024 Orpagu has incorporated its first two delivery vans to improve distribution
A Guarda - The Organization of Longline Fishermen of A Guarda (Orpagu) is about to close a decisive year, full of achievements and great advances. In 2024, the organization has tripled its workforce - from 8 to 24 workers - demonstrating a clear commitment to job creation and strengthening its structure to continue leading the fishing sector. At peak times of work, the workforce reaches 50 people.
One of the highlights has been the consolidation of its cold storage plant located in the Tui business park, which is not only one of the most modern in the northwestern peninsula but also one of the most active, having processed more than 14,000 tons of fish so far this year.

The plant is key, and will be even more so in the future, to regulate supply and demand through storage, allowing Orpagu to become a benchmark in surface longlining. "We want to continue increasing the profitability of our associated producers, offering them centralized services and working to add value to their catches. We work to improve first-sale prices and are committed to the constant promotion of their interests,"highlights Juana Parada, managing director.
But Orpagu's commitment goes much further: sustainability is the main axis of all its operations. From the responsible fishing practiced by its fleet to the eco-efficient practices of its cold storage plant, everything is designed to protect the environment. In addition, the organization has opted for innovation in its offer, launching products on the market that meet the demands of new consumers: more sustainable and adapted to current trends.

Strengthening local distribution
With the aim of bringing its products even closer to consumers, in 2024 Orpagu has incorporated its first two delivery vans to improve distribution in Baixo Miño, Vigo and the surrounding area. This step allows them to close the cycle of their value chain: from the sea to the customer's door. "With these vans, we not only guarantee faster and more efficient deliveries, but we also reaffirm our commitment to quality and proximity,"they affirm from the organization.
Orpagu is not only committed to sustainability and innovation but also deeply dedicated to social responsibility. The organization actively fosters values like education and engagement with younger generations through initiatives such as literary contests and traditional celebrations, including the renowned Festa do Peixe Espada. This event features specially tailored outreach activities for children, aimed at nurturing an understanding of the fishing industry and instilling respect for the marine environment from an early age.
In addition to its outstanding work in the fishing sector, the organization from A Guarda also demonstrates its commitment to local sports through the sponsorship of teams in various disciplines such as handball, rowing, basketball, football and cycling. This support not only promotes the sporting development of the community, but also reinforces the values of teamwork, effort and personal improvement, principles that Orpagu shares and promotes as part of its corporate philosophy.
The future of Orpagu
Orpagu's path combines tradition, sustainability and modernity, and 2024 is just the beginning of a new phase of growth. The organization is preparing to continue making a difference in the sector, generating value for its producers and bringing the best flavors of the sea to its customers.
