Nofir collects discarded equipment from fishing and fish farming around the world.

Giving New Life to Discarded Fishing and Fish Farming Equipment

  (NORWAY, 9/18/2023)

Nofir provides a holistic solution for discarded equipment from aquaculture. The company provides traceability all the way from the fish farmer to new material, with detailed environmental reports and background documents.

The company's system provides a clear channel for disposal of materials used in ropes and nets that have previously been landfilled, incinerated or discarded at sea. The system ensures that these materials are recycled into ECONYL®, a 100% regenerated nylon yarn made from old fishing nets and other nylon waste, which can be reused repeatedly, even indefinitely, without degradation. This reduces overall demand for virgin plastic, thereby reducing the use of petroleum resources and resultant carbon emissions.

Discarded equipment is dismanteled and ends up as raw material for the recycling industry, where it's used in a wide variety of products.

With Nofir’s help, recycling centres such as Aquafil, in Slovenia, can turn these waste products into ECONYL® yarn, which can be used in clothing, textiles, carpets and many other applications. Discarded equipment can be recycled into plastic granules that can be used in the production of garden furniture, automotive parts and much more.

The Nofir system has prevented 23,500 metric tons of discarded equipment from going to landfills or ending up at sea, delivering a solution to a problem that has dogged the fishing industry for generations and promoting the sustainable use and conservation of marine resources.

Nofir’s system is generating an annual 7,000 metric tons of raw material for the recycling industry, using a skilled team and network spanning fisheries and aquaculture.

 What can be recycled:

  • Fish farming nets: Fish farming nets can be recycled through the Nofir system.
  • Cleaning fish shelters: Cleaning fish shelters are collected directly at fish farmers or from service stations for recycling.
  • Tarpaulins: Tarpaulins used in aquaculture are dismantled and recycled or reused after treatment in the Nofir production.
  • Ropes: Nofir collects ropes directly from net lofts, fish farmers, service stations and waste facilities. Ropes make up a perfect raw material for granulate that can be directly used in a new production.
  • Fisheries Nets and trawl nets: Fisheries Nets and trawl nets from fisheries are perfect for recyling. The Nofir team will handle all dismantling needed.
  • Waste companies: Waste companies often receive discarded equipment from fisheries and aquaculture for landfilling. Much of this could have been recycled.
Since 2011 Nofir has collected 60,847 tons of discarded fishing and fishing equipment.

Nofir arranges transport and takes care of all documentation for discarded fishing and fish farming equipment.
