Towards a new Marine Protected Area 'Frente Valdés'

  (ARGENTINA, 9/5/2023)

This Thursday they will present in Puerto Madryn a day to disseminate the Bill that is in the National Congress that provides for the creation of a new AMP. It is located in its entirety outside 12 nautical miles and is a sector that is currently closed to fishing for the species Merluccius hubbsi and Pleoticus muelleri.

The Pampa Azul Ecocentre in the city of Puerto Madryn will host a meeting on September 7 from 8:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in which the scope of the project that proposes the creation of the so-called Marine Protected Area “Frente Valdés” will be presented. This initiative is aimed at promoting the balance between conservation and sustainable development, in a specific area of the Argentine Sea.

This event is jointly organized between the National Parks Administration (APN) and the Ministry of the Environment and Sustainable Development of the Nation (MAyDS), within the framework of Project GCP/ARG/025/GFF "Strengthening of the Management and Protection of Coastal Marine Biodiversity in Key Ecological Areas and the Application of the Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries (EEP)”, in execution by the MAyDS with the FAO as the agency for the implementation of the GEF funds. As a parallel activity, in the Ecocentro space, environmental education activities will be developed with local schools.

Consensus building

The National Director of Environmental Management of Water and Aquatic Ecosystems of the Ministry of the Environment and Sustainable Development of the Nation, Gabriela González Trilla, told REVISTA PUERTO that this bill has already been presented in the National Chamber of Deputies and "is the result of many years of work carried out by the Ministry of the Environment and we hope that Congress will treat and approve it. We have worked hard to seek agreements and build consensus,” she highlighted.

"The protection of the marine environment is for the good of all, both from the productive sector and from the point of view of conservation," stressed the graduate in Biological Sciences, who is also a CONICET scholar and researcher.

Delimitation

González Trilla maintained that "this is an unprecedented project because an environmental baseline was generated, with a lot of information regarding the area, and based on that information, the sector to be protected was chosen."

The bill determines that the Marine Protected Area "Frente Valdés" will be constituted to the North by the line formed between the following geographical points: 63º 25' W Longitude, 42º S Latitude and 62º W Longitude, 42º S Latitude; meanwhile, the Western limit corresponds to the twelve (12) mile limit of the territorial Sea; while the South limit, constituted by the line formed between the geographical points: 63º 39' W Longitude, 43º S Latitude and 62º W Longitude, 43º S Latitude. It is completed with the East limit, from this last point following the 62º Longitude meridian Or northward to the first geographic point mentioned on the Northern boundary (62º W Longitude, 42º S Latitude). It is clarified that the area is located in its entirety outside the 12 miles of jurisdiction of the provinces.

The official of the Ministry of Environment of the Nation and representative of that ministry in the Federal Fisheries Council pointed out that it is a sector "that we identify as an area of opportunity in terms of conservation, since it belongs to the great ban on hake and also By Resolution 7/18- CFP (management measures for the fishery of the species Pleoticus muelleri) it was also closed for this resource. This allows us to minimize interference with the economic activities of the area”, clarified Gabriela González Trilla.

“It is a project that tries to reconcile the interests of all sectors. In this space of the dissemination day that we will carry out in Puerto Madryn, all sectors are invited, from the academic who are the ones who worked hard in the generation of the baseline, that is why the place was also chosen, the Ecocentro Pampa Azul ; All the fishing chambers have also been invited to listen to their concerns, and in addition to representatives of the Ministry of the Environment, there will be National Parks because if the law is sanctioned, it will be the enforcement authority,” she added.
