Joint protest day of the fishing sector on May 9, 'Europe Day'

  (EUROPEAN UNION, 5/8/2023)
  • ARVI joins the common protest day of the fishing sector on May 9, Europe Day, against the European Commission's policies of destruction of the community fishing future.
  • The action, promoted and coordinated by EBFA (European Bottom Fishing Alliance), EUROPECHE (Association of National Fisheries Organizations of the EU) and EAPO (European Association of Producer Organizations), also has the support of the main trade union at European level, ETF, in which CC.OO. and UGT.
Vigo - On Tuesday, May 9, at 12:00 in the morning, community fishing vessels, whatever their location, will sound their horns for 5 minutes, both those that are in port and those that are in high sea.

The horns of the ships are used to send important signals, some vital, including the call for help; that is why community fishing boats, wherever they are, will sound them at 12:00 on Europe Day: the fishermen of the European Union will launch their call for help to community society, against a policy that only seeks their extinction, the shortage of products from our markets, the loss of minimal food sovereignty (already 70% of the seafood consumed by the EU is imported), as well as the economic and social future of the European regions that depend on fishing .

Community fishermen believe that Europe Day, which celebrates the unity of Europeans and the achievements made in recent years, is an exceptional moment to show the discrepancy of the entire EU fishing sector with a fisheries policy that increasingly defends the interests of Europe less and less supports its fishermen, with a European Commission that legislates and lives with its back to the reality of its citizens with proposals such as the package of measures included in the Action Plan, which will be de facto a point of no return for European fishing capacity from which we believe it will be impossible to recover (the plan includes an explicit wish to gradually eliminate European moving-bottom fishing, which currently employs 20,000 fishermen, which in the opinion of the sector may mean the disappearance of this activity), and with a Commissioner Sinkevicius who has repeatedly demonstrated his belligerence against Community fishing, his contempt for all Community citizens who live off the sea, and for a sector that provides the healthiest food in Europe and that has made a huge effort to protect the marine environment and recover fish stocks.

For the arguments set forth above, at 12:00 in the morning on Tuesday, May 9, the horns of the community fishing vessels will speak, and we hope that they will be heard by Europe and this call of all European fishing will be heeded.
