CONAPESCA reaffirms its commitment to promote fisheries management measures in a sustainable manner.
Temporary fishing bans agreed for shrimp in the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea

The National Commission of Aquaculture and Fisheries (CONAPESCA) agreed on the calendar of temporary fishing bans for the year 2019 for all shrimp species in marine waters of the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea, which include the states of Tamaulipas, Veracruz, Campeche, Tabasco and Yucatan.
The decision was made during the session of the National Committee of Fisheries and Aquaculture (CNPA), based on the scientific and technical information presented by the National Fisheries Institute (INAPESCA), which establishes dates and closed areas for 2019 for the different species of shrimp that are caught in the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea.
The session was chaired by the manager of the Directorate General of Fisheries and Aquaculture Management of Conapesca, César Julio Saucedo, and the explanation was given by the deputy director general of Fisheries Research in the Atlantic at the Inapesca, Ramón Isaac Rojas González.
Rojas González outlined the status of shrimp stocks based on the results of crustacean sampling and projections made for the establishment of the fishing bans in the different areas of the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea.
The dates and closed areas were established as follows:
Marine waters
I.- From 00:00 on May 1, 2019 and until 24 hours on August 15, 2019, in the area that extends from the border with the United States, in Tamaulipas, to the mouth of the Coatzacoalcos River, Veracruz, or a later date depending on the evaluations of INAPESCA.
II.- From 00:00 hours on June 15, 2019 and until 24 hours on October 31, 2019, on the coastal strip off the states of Campeche and Tabasco.
III.- From 00:00 hours on May 1, 2019 and until 24:00 hours on September 30, 2019, in the coastal strip off the states of Campeche and Tabasco, for the Atantic sea bob shrimp fishery.
IV.- From 00:00 hours on June 15, 2019 and until 24:00 hours on October 31, 2019, in the Contoy area.
Estuarine lagoon systems
I.- From 00:00 hours on May 28, 2019 and until 24:00 hours on July 12, 2019 in the estuarine lagoon systems of the Gulf of Mexico, from the border with the United States, in Tamaulipas, to the mouth of the Coatzacoalcos River, Veracruz.
II.- As of 00:00 hours on May 1, 2019 and until 24:00 hours on September 30, 2019, in the estuarine lagoon systems of the state of Tabasco.
