Mexican market continues closed to Honduran shrimp
(HONDURAS, 11/24/2017)
The National Association of Aquaculturists of Honduras (ANDAH) has expressed its concern about the huge losses that are being caused by the restrictions imposed by Mexico on imports of Honduran farmed shrimp.
It is worth remembering that last October 20, the National Service of Health, Safety and Agri-Food Quality (SENASICA) of Mexico approved the blockage of shrimp from Honduras stating that in this country there is yellow head disease (ECA).
However, the National Service of Agricultural Health and Safety (SENASA) from Honduras presented the evidence endorsed by the Australian Animal Health Laboratory (CSIRO) ruling out the presence of this disease in the country.
According to the Minister of Agriculture and Livestock (SAG), the measure implemented by Mexico is illegal since the protocol requiring a minimum of three tests to support a blocking measure and not just one, as has been the case, was not met.
In response to the claims from Honduras, SENASICA has requested additional information on the traceability elements of the 10 sampled farms.
The restrictions imposed by Mexico have had a strong negative impact on the Honduran shrimp sector. In fact, two packing plants have had to stop their operations temporarily in Choluteca for not exporting their products to the Mexican market.
According to ANADAH, as a result of the implemented blockage, since October 20, about 110 containers of Honduran shrimp have been stopped exporting.
