Shrimp industry needs to invest USD 1 billion to increase productivity
(PERU, 11/13/2017)
The Peruvian shrimp industry should invest close to USD 1 billion to change its production matrix in order to increase its productivity, said the president of the fishing and aquaculture committee of the Association of Exporters (ADEX), Henry Quiroz.
"Now, the objective is to have a greater export supply that allows us to arrive in optimal conditions to new markets, especially to one as big as it is China," he told the Official Gazette El Peruano.
It is important to remember that the Ministry of Production (PRODUCE) signed a sanitary protocol for the export of Peruvian shrimp to the market of that country with authorities of the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ) of China.
Quiroz explained that to meet export growth, entrepreneurs in the sector foresee to change the production matrix, and move from an extensive model -- which today makes it possible to produce up to 8 tonnes per hectare -- to an intensive one, in which they could produce up to 100 tonnes per hectare.
But performing this change will require a large investment in the short and medium term, of about USD 300,000 per ha. And Quiroz stressed that currently Peru has 4,000 hectares in production.
The representative of ADEX explained that to make the technological leap in this sector not only requires investments, but also taking on the challenge of implementation. This implies having specialized labour and a plan to prevent and control shrimp diseases, among other things.
Quiroz argues that access to the gigantic market will justify the investments needed to change the matrix, and estimates that in April of next year the first shrimp shipments will be able to be performed from the country to China.
At present, the main market for Peruvian shrimp shipments is the United States, which accounts for 60 per cent of the national production of this crustacean.
