Grimsby processor changes ownership

Grimsby-located seafood processor Albert Darnell has been bought out by Surrey-based New England Seafood International (NESI), as part of the latter's expansion plans.

Through this purchase, the firm’s new owner has swooped for the Europarc business as well as more than two acres of neighbouring land, The Grimsby Telegraph reported.

"This is great for the area. One thing that they have done is purchased land at the back of the factory too, a further 2.2 acres, and that tells its own story,” pointed out Mike Woods, the managing director of the sold firm.

The executive explained that in this way, they can concentrate on food service and other work they do.

"We have a strategy for growth over the next year to three years, and for the area it is very, very good. For Albert Darnell it means what we started we can go on a finish, get the growth and hopefully do plenty of business," Woods stated.

The executive director, who is also chairman of Grimsby Fish Merchants Association, pinpointed the benefits the change would offer for the firm and the area, as he hopes the number of employees may grow.

The Chessington operation is a GBP 90 million turnover firm, and a major supplier of dozens of species including wild salmon, seabass and seabream, and is one of the largest importers of fresh tuna.

Customers include Marks & Spencer, Sainsbury's and Waitrose, in addition to smaller retailers, restaurant chains, food service markets and wholesale sectors.

Albert Darnell employs around 100 people and was founded by Gordon Woods and his son Mike in 1982.

The firm's Europarc facility features high-tech fish processing equipment as well as modern retail packing systems.
