Salmon exports to China reach new record
(CANADA, 5/4/2016)
Salmon exports that British Columbia (BC) sent to China in 2015 exceeded more than double the previous record in 2002, encouraged by an emerging appetite for the farm-raised species in the Asian country. And there is evidence to prove this positive trend will continue this year.
According to statistics Canada, China is now BC’s second most important market next to the United States, which has historically been the sector’s primary export market, and remains so today.
Trade with Asia overall is up 38 per cent over the previous record in 2013 with BC exporting fresh farm-raised salmon for the first time to South Korea, a market that shows great potential as Canada and South Korea implement the Canada-Korea Free Trade Agreement.
Overall, BC exported a record 54.4 million kilograms of farm-raised salmon to 11 countries.
“Demand for salmon raised in BC has never been higher,” stressed Jeremy Dunn, Executive Director, BC Salmon Farmers Association (BCSFA).
“The United States remains our most important trading partner, and will be so for some time, however we are encouraged at the market diversification and the prospects for growing demand in the future – particularly in Asia,” Dunn added.
Statistics Canada CATSNET Analytics has revealed the latest figures related to British Columbia farm-raised Atlantic salmon new records:
- Exports to China: 1,250 metric tonnes, reaching a value of CAD 9.2 million (USD 7.3 million), representing a 140 per cent growth in volume from the previous high in 2012;
- Exports to the United States: 52,150 metric tones, with a value of CAD 404.9 million (USD 322.8 million), which is a 2 per cent increase in volume from the previous record in 2012 and a 40 per cent increase in export value;
- BC accounts exported 2,839 metric tonnes to Asia in 2015 with a total value of CAD 20.5 million (USD 16.3 million). This represented a 30 per cent increase in trade value over the previous record in 2013;
- BC accounts for 63 per cent of the Canadian export value to the US;
- BC’s total 2015 farm-raised salmon export value is CAD 431.6 million (USD 344.1 million).
Salmon farming has a total economic impact of CAD 1.1 billion (USD 877,000 million) in British Columbia and accounts for more than 5,000 total jobs.
In addition, salmon farmers are working closely with coastal First Nations with 19 economic impact benefit agreements in place counting for 78 per cent of all salmon raised in BC.
