Camanchaca loses 1.5 million salmon due to harmful algae
(CHILE, 2/26/2016)
Compañia Pesquera Camanchaca informed the Superintendency of Securities and Insurance (SVS) that Puelche, Mañihuelco and Contao farms, owned by its subsidiary Salmones Camanchaca, were affected in recent days by a harmful algal bloom.
The company explained that in such centres, located in Region X, there were about three million fish between 1.5 and 2.9 kilos, equivalent to an estimated biomass of 6,750 kg, with a book value as of 31 January this year of USD 22.2 million. In addition, it reported that preliminary estimates indicate that mortality would amount to about 1.5 million fish, equivalent to 3,400 tonnes of product.
The company says it has taken "all contingency and mitigation plans for these situations, further contributing ships and high-tonnage fishing assets for removal and disposal of mortality."
It also stressed that the centres concerned were insured against the risk of harmful algal blooms (HAB).
