Pioneering project developed for Northern anchovy sustainable management
(CHILE, 7/8/2015)
Two fishing companies have signed an agreement with the Centre for Applied Marine Research (CIAM) and the NGO Sustainable Fisheries Partnership (SFP) to promote the development of an improvement project for the anchovy fishery in Northern Chile.
Specifically, the initiative will be developed in the regions of Arica and Parinacota, Tarapaca and Antofagasta.
Through this agreement, including technical work, information exchange and training, among other features, the Chilean fishing industry of the northern region aims to reaffirm its commitment to the sustainability of marine resources. In addition, it hopes to achieve added value for their anchovy products and reach markets where sustainability is a key issue.
This pioneering project in the Chilean fishing industry has been joined by the firms CORPESCA and Camanchaca. CIAM will be the general coordinator and will be responsible for communicating and periodically publishing the achieved progress, while highlighting the actions and the results obtained.
For its part, the SFP will monitor the northern anchovy management follow-up programme in order to make it conform to the highest global standards of fisheries sustainability.
"Our role is crucial in research and generation of the adequate knowledge to properly manage the resources. This is our commitment," said Arturo Natho, CORPESCA general manager, according to Aqua.
On the other hand, the executive director of the Centre, Carlos Merino, commented that "the creation and implementation of the fishery improvement project, based on scientific evidence needed to investigate and know together with the fisheries firms of the North" is a challenge that has been ongoing for some time.
"But now this task is of greater value, since the agreement reached within the framework of the guidelines delivered by SFP will provide an assessment of its progress and the advice and support of international experts," stressed Merino.
