Shrimp can contribute for frozen food exports to reach record value

Bangladesh exported frozen food worth USD 534.98 million during the fiscal year from July 2013 to April 2014, according to the Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) data.
"Global price rise earlier of the year has helped us earn more," pointed out Kazi Bellayet Hossain, a senior vice president of Bangladesh Frozen Foods Exporters Association (BFFEA), informed the Financial Express.
And he added: "This price rose following the bacterial infection known as 'early mortality syndrome' that struck vannamei shrimp farms in China, Vietnam, Thailand and Vietnam. This disease kills the baby shrimp."
Hossain also explained that the scarcity of vennamie helped push up the price as buyers were ready to buy shrimp at higher price.
For his part, BFFEA President Md Amin Ullah forecast that Bengali exports will reach a new record this fiscal year, since early this year prices were 20 to 25 per cent higher. "This price was not so high in previous couple of years," he stressed.
"Despite continuous political turmoil in the last half of 2013, the export growth of this sector is satisfactory," he stressed.
Furthermore, he concluded that it is necessary for them to observe the market price that will create an impact on the frozen food export of the upcoming fiscal year.
BFFEA sources reported that Bangladesh exports around 50,000 tonnes of shrimp a year to the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, the United States, Germany, France, Spain, Russia, India, Japan, Vietnam, Thailand, and China.
