Fishing associations claim aid
(ARGENTINA, 6/14/2011)
Leaders of major fishing business chambers of Buenos Aires and Patagonia stated the sharp rise in domestic costs, the stability of the dollar and the controlled evolution of prices are some of the biggest problems facing the industry today.
This data was presented as part of the formal submission of the National Fishing Sector Consensus, comprising industry organizations from the provinces of Buenos Aires, Río Negro, Chubut, Santa Cruz and Tierra del Fuego.
"Currently, there is little incentive to develop the activity, generating disinvestment," the chambers explained during the meeting.
"Companies are going through a period during which they are obtaining zero or negative profits and several of them were dragged to a bankruptcy situation," added the six chambers grouped in the Consensus.
Therefore, it is intended that the Government should develop a series of measures for the recovery of the domestic fishing industry.
Pescare reported that the cost of one of the major inputs – diesel -- increased from 1.89 (USD 0.45) a liter to ARS 2.99 (USD 0.71), that is to say that between January 2009 and the same month of 2011, it rose 58.2 per cent.
In addition, cardboard, polyethylene and repairs, among other supplies, became more expensive.
"We understand the need for a package of measures that we are starting to discuss with the authorities," said Oscar Fortunato, president of the Council of Argentine Fisheries Companies (CEPA).
Consensus members explained that their objective is "to propose and find initiatives to address the causes and effects of the crisis."
Although official figures indicate that in 2010 the sector saw record exports, the Chambers stressed that "this was not synonymous with prosperity for the companies."
Even though the companies opted to increase production volumes to try to offset their fixed costs, they assured they had minimal gain margins, zero profits or even financial losses, reported The Atlantic.
The Consensus was joined by: the Chamber of Deep-Sea Fishing Vessels Shipowners (Caabpa), the Chamber of the Argentine Fishery Industry (Caipa), CEPA, Argentine Patagonian Fishery Industry Chamber (Capip), the Chamber of Fishing and Freezing Shipowners from Argentina (Capeca) and the Chamber of Argentine Jigger Owners (CAPA).
