UCN and Biomar sign palm ruff cultivation agreement
(CHILE, 9/1/2010)
Biomar, one of the main suppliers of fish feed worldwide, and the University of Catolica del Norte (UCN) have signed an agreement to collaborate on the joint implementation of a project titled the "Development of a cultivation technology base for the production of palm ruff. Part two. Producing and raising juveniles in cages."
The initiative aims to increase, validate and economically evaluate technology developed for the species during a trial period. The project is a continuation of another project developed between 2004 and 2007 by the UCN, which managed to create a group of breeders including the production of the first few hundred juveniles of the species.
The new proposal also has the backing of Fondef, the UCN and other associated companies.
The project manager will be Dr. Alfonso Silva, who is currently the head of the Fish Harvesting Laboratory at the UCN.
According to Dr. Silva, the palm ruff (Seriolella violacea) has attractive export prices in markets such as Japan, China, Spain and Portugal. Which explains the significant efforts that the team has made to breed the fish in recent years.
Silva is also working on a different project with Fondef, which is dedicated to the research and development of another species native to Chile: the yellowtail amberjack ( Seriola lalandi). The species was selected by Conycit, through the National Aquaculture Diversification Programme, as one of the four main species with comparative advantages in technological development within the country.
Biomar Chile is part of the BioMar Group which is of Danish origin, it was established in 1962 and today it is one of the three main suppliers of fish food worldwide.
BioMar group provides feed for over 25 species of fish to some 50 countries. They also have production facilities in Chile, Norway, Scotland, Greece, France and Denmark.
