Farmers demand better labelling
(AUSTRALIA, 8/5/2010)
Australian prawn and barramundi farmers on Wednesday pushed on all political parties to support improved country-of-origin labelling (COOL) and streamlining for the aquaculture industry.
Farmers and industry took action at their industry conference on the Gold Coast and vowed to join together to pass a motion of support mandating that all sides of politics support a clear labelling system for cooked seafood, AFN reports.
Even though supermarkets must label seafood clearly, Australian Prawn Farmers' Association president Nick Moore said, restaurants and fish and chip shops are not following through with the requirement.
“It's time our politicians sorted this out,” he declared. “With the federal election just a few weeks away, now is the time for politicians to deliver improved country-of-origin labelling for cooked seafood.”
It boils down to protecting the distinctiveness of Australia, he said, Big Pond reports.
“Unclear labelling dilutes our unique Australian icons. We get fake, cheap and imported didgeridoos and boomerangs and now we are getting barramundi that is not Australian,” he commented.
Moore noted that although the country has laws making it illegal to sell fake Rolex watches from Asia there are no clear labelling rules employed on menus and order boards for seafood.
“Consumers want and deserve to know where their seafood is coming from, and Australian farmers need to be able to get their message across at the point many consumers are purchasing seafood - on the restaurant menu,” he affirmed.
