Sobeys BAP Private Label Seafood Products

  (CANADA, 1/16/2010)

Sobeys, Canada’s second largest food retailer, has recently launched its first line of private-label farmed seafood products certified according to the Global Aquaculture Alliance’s (GAA) Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP).

“Sobeys is actively engaged in industry initiatives on sustainable seafood. We support the BAP certification standards and are pleased to begin using it on a number of our private-label products,” said Shawn McMurter, Sobey’s national procurement director for meat and seafood. “We look forward to the continued evolution of the BAP program.”

Peter Redmond, GAA’s Vice President of development said, “Sobeys has demonstrated exceptional leadership. We are pleased to add them to our growing list of companies to adopt BAP certification.”

Sobeys is an active participant in the Food Marketing Institute’s Sustainable Seafood Working Group. The company has engaged with numerous stakeholders on this important issue from regulators to environmental and supplier trade groups to sustainable seafood standards bodies.

Sobeys private label group is providing leadership by sourcing some farmed seafood that has been BAP certified and also wild seafood that has been Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certified. The balance of private label seafood products are under review for sustainable sourcing. The company’s regions are engaging with their supply chains to seek improvements to the sustainability of the seafood they source.

As an Ocean Wise partner, Sobeys is committed to offering consumers a growing selection of sustainable seafood options. The Ocean Wise logo confirms that fish and seafood products are caught or farmed in such a way that ensures the long-term health and stability of that species, as well as the greater marine environment. Created by the Vancouver Aquarium, the Ocean Wise program helps consumers make sound, sustainable seafood purchases.

About Ocean Wise Program

Ocean Wise is a Vancouver Aquarium conservation program created to educate and empower consumers about the issues surrounding sustainable seafood. Ocean Wise works directly with restaurants, markets, food services and suppliers ensuring that they have the most current scientific information regarding seafood and helping them make ocean-friendly buying decisions. The options are highlighted on their menus and display cases with the Ocean Wise symbol, making it easier for consumers to make environmentally friendly seafood choices. The Ocean Wise logo next to a menu or seafood item is an assurance that the item is a good choice for keeping ocean life healthy and abundant for generations to come.
