Maersk Completes Order of 20 Dual-Fuel Vessels for Fleet Renewal
(DENMARK, 12/27/2024)
A.P. Moller - Maersk has finalized agreements with three shipyards for the construction of 20 dual-fuel container vessels, marking the completion of its fleet renewal plan announced in August 2024.
Copenhagen – With a combined capacity of 300,000 TEU, the vessels will play a pivotal role in the company's ongoing fleet modernization efforts. These orders align with Maersk's strategic commitment to decarbonization, as all vessels will be equipped with dual-fuel engines designed to operate on lower-emission fuels.
Anda Cristescu, Head of Chartering & Newbuilding at Maersk, stated:
"We are pleased to have signed agreements for these 20 vessels, which fulfill our August 2024 announcement to acquire 300,000 TEU capacity. This marks a significant step forward in our fleet renewal program, demonstrating our dedication to reducing carbon emissions. All vessels will feature dual-fuel engines with the capability to run on more sustainable fuels."
The new vessels will range in size from 9,000 to 17,000 TEU, each featuring liquefied gas dual-fuel propulsion systems. This variety in vessel sizes ensures Maersk will have the flexibility to deploy them across various roles and functions within its future global network.
Cristescu added:
"Given the range of vessel sizes, these ships will provide significant flexibility in our future operations. Once integrated into the fleet, they will replace existing vessels, boosting overall efficiency and environmental performance."
The first of the 20 vessels will be delivered in 2028, with the final delivery scheduled for 2030.
In addition to these owned vessels, Maersk also announced in its August update its intention to charter dual-fuel vessels, including both methanol and liquefied gas-powered ships, to further enhance its fleet. With a total capacity of 500,000 TEU, these chartered vessels will also replace older capacity as they are phased in.
